Less than one in 20 credit cards offers cashback rewards today on card spending, while over a quarter of cards offered this six years ago, according to a study by data provider Defaqto.

Reward cards generally fall into four categories: Airmiles, cashback, points schemes and shopping rewards.

As cashback offers can be the most expensive of these four, David Black from Defaqto believes providers will begin to pare them back as the cost of the recession hits their balance sheets.

If you were born after 1980 you probably take the existence of credit cards for granted. You’ve been seeing them in use your entire life. But in the larger scheme of things, they really are a recent development.

Credit cards were first issued by oil companies and department stores in the early 1900’s – to be used only at their own establishments. Rather than offers of long-term credit, these cardboard or metal cards were a convenience for customers who then paid the entire bill at month’s end. Read more…

The supermarket giant doubled the discounts on its popular Clubcard during the festive period to entice more shoppers into its stores.

These reward cards are increasingly popular among bargain-hunting shoppers as they get cash back or discounts off future spending.

More than 15 million people have at least one loyalty card – such as a Tesco Clubcard, Nectar or Boots Advantage.

At the same time, rewards offered by credit card companies have dwindled. About 30 cards offer rewards for spending (see box), compared with 140 five years ago.

American Express is bucking the trend and has just launched a rewards credit card. It awards three points for every £1 spent with the big supermarket chains, up to a maximum of £500 a month. <
