EM Printing owner Ken Quick recently purchased his first commercial property, a 44,500-square-foot space on Bartlett Corporate Drive.
As a business that started out of a garage, EM Printing is a study in steady growth.
Over the course of nearly 30 years, the printing company, formerly known as East Memphis Printing, has grown from $35,000 in annual billing to $5.5 million.
Most recently, owner Ken Quick purchased his first commercial property, spanning 44,500 square feet at 3081 Bartlett Corporate Drive.
“I’ve always wanted to own my own business and had an entrepreneurial spirit,” said Quick, 52. “I started right out of college in my parent’s garage with my mother as my partner.

International Paper Co. will purchase a rival’s packaging business in Asia for $200 million in cash.
Memphis-based IP will buy 13 corrugated box plants and two specialty packaging facilities from Swedish paper company Svenska Ceullulosa Aktiebolaget.
The plants in China, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia employ 4,500. SCA said the Asian operation reported sales of $250 million in 2009.

The Center City Commission wants John Q. Memphian to know Downtown has plenty of convenient, affordable parking: more than 40,000 spaces between the Medical Center and the river, including thousands in garages.
But lack of adequate parking is a recurring complaint heard by Downtown development officials as they attempt to promote new retail, office and residential development.
To close the gap between public perception and reality, the commission is looking at spending $120,000 on a marketing campaign that would include creation of a smart phone application to help people find parking.
The Downtown Parking Authority voted today to back a budget proposal that includes Center City’s first marketing push specifically aimed at lifting awareness of parking possibilities.

Smith & Nephew Inc. will be the presenting sponsor of the 2010 St. Jude Classic.
The medical device maker replaces the now-defunct Stanford Financial Group as the primary sponsor of the golf tournament.
The event will be renamed the St. Jude Classic Presented by Smith & Nephew. It will be played June 7-13 at TPC Southwind in Memphis.
St. Jude will remain the sole beneficiary of the tournament. The event has raised more than $23.3 million for the hospital since 1970.

(NASDAQ: TWPG) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement to build the premier middle-market investment bank with significantly enhanced investment banking, research and wealth management capabilities. An investor and analyst conference call has been scheduled for today, April 26, at 6:00 a.m. (Pacific) and 9:00 a.m. (Eastern).
The terms of the agreement, approved by the boards of both companies, call for each TWPG share to be exchanged for 0.1364 shares of SF common stock. Thomas Weisel Partners has approximately 32.8 million shares outstanding as of March 31, 2010. The deal is valued at more than $300 million, which includes the outstanding shares and restricted stock units and warrants.
