Honey products company Comvita’s first-quarter sales and earnings are better than in the previous two years, despite the headwinds from the strong New Zealand dollar, chairman Neil Craig told the annual shareholders’ meeting.

“It is early days, but we are comfortable we are going to have a significantly better financial result in 2011/12,” Craig said.

“Further, our investment in Derma Sciences has grown sharply in value and the contribution from our Medihoney range sold by Derma Sciences is now material,” he said.

Comvita’s net profit for the year ended March fell to just $0.5 million from $5 million the previous year with sales falling to $82 million from $85 million.

Comvita has a long history of disappointing investors.

Craig said the board and management are committed to producing an acceptable return on invested capital.

The company now has 80% of sales offshore, has significantly higher profit margins than five years ago, a business diversified away from complete dependence on Manuka honey, very low net debt and net asset backing per share of about $2.60, Craig said.
