American Express and Delta will sweeten SkyMiles credit cards June 1 when cardholders start getting the first checked bag free on Delta flights.

Waiver of $25 a bag one-way fees will save a family of four $200 round-trip. It’s available for as many as nine passengers on the same reservation.

“We felt like bag fees was a very topical issue for a lot of people. Any time anyone goes and takes a trip, this will be a benefit they can enjoy,” said David Rabkin, American Express vice president of Delta Co-Brands Portfolio.

An advertising campaign, with the theme “My Card Can,” begins today, he said.

The longtime credit card partner of Delta has been aggressively wooing former Northwest WorldPerks Visa customers since last year. The fee waiver applies to flights booked by U.S. consumer and small business Gold, Platinum and Reserve SkyMiles card holders.

Infant mortality rate study gets grant

A Memphis study to reduce infant mortality rates received a $1.7 million boost from the state’s largest health insurance company.

The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation gave The University of Tennessee Research Foundation the grant to expand the Blues Project in Shelby and Hamilton counties. The study is being conducted by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

The project gives TennCare-eligible pregnant women access to prenatal care at approved community health centers. The project has served nearly 1,000 women since it was launched in 2005.

The new grant money will extend services to 500 pregnant women at two centers in Chattanooga and to 500 women in the Memphis area.

Fred’s has focused its efforts on the Millington/Tipton County area, the area hardest hit by the storm.

Fred’s donated a vanload of personal hygiene items like diapers, razors, socks and blankets to those seeking shelter at the Millington Baptist Church, the city’s declared shelter for storm victims. The retailer also gave the church $350 in gift cards for any other necessity items.

The church is still seeking donated items like clothing, underwear, shampoo, bath towels, brooms, mops, gloves, buckets and more.

For more information on how to help with relief efforts in Millington, contact Doug Dickson at First Baptist Church at (901) 872-2264.
