WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) — Using a head-up guidance system on commercial aircraft would have positively influenced more than 30 percent of accidents over a 13-year period, a study shows.

A study funded by aeronautics company Rockwell Collins found that incorporating a head-up guidance system could have positively affected 38 percent of all commercial aircraft accidents during a 13-year period.

The findings, which included input from the non-profit Flight Safety Foundation, found that accident prevention during take off was 69 percent less likely and 57 percent less likely for landings in airplanes equipped with head-up guidance technology.

“Head-up guidance systems technology is a great safety tool for the prevention of runway excursions, loss of control and approach and landing accidents,” said Bob Vandel, foundation fellow for Flight Safety Foundation

The study found that flight path and speed error information on head-up guidance were the most beneficial information to the pilot.

The Flight Safety Foundation preformed analysis on data from 983 airline accidents from 1995 through 2007 for the study commissioned by Rockwell Collins, which manufactures a head-up guidance display system.
