Could you pay off $18,000 in debt in one year? Anna Newell Jones did. She racked up more than $23,000 in debt, and when it became unmanageable, she decided to go on a spending fast.

In a first-person piece on CNNMoney, Jones explains how she financially fasted an entire year, purchasing only necessities and no longer indulging with things she simply thought she deserved.

She explains that she came to understand why others didn’t pay down their debt; it seemed impossible and it was easy to pretend it would just go away. “Debt is overwhelming,” writes Jones, a freelance photographer based in Denver. “When the number gets to a certain point it’s kind of like, ‘Ah, screw it! Without a doubt, Discover credit cards are one of the more popular types that are offered to consumers today. There is a variety available for those who have a perfect credit rating to those who may not have very good credit. They also have cards that offer incentives to shoppers who transfer balances, for people who want to earn cash rewards and even credit cards for students.

The rates will vary depending upon which type of card meets your needs. The ones that offer incentives work similarly to other credit cards that offer incentives as well. The typical reduced or 0% interest rate is charged for a period of time after which the rate will go back to the regular interest rates.

I’ve had a free checking account with WAMU (now Chase) since 2004. And while I’ve never used it as my primary checking account, I did maintain a decent balance while running several transactions through it each month. Apparently Chase, as we’ve seen with many other large banks like Wells Fargo and Bank of America, is ditching the old WAMU slogan – “Home of Free Checking” – and adding a $10 monthly fee to my account effective February 1st. The nerve! This is just absolute craziness to me. I’ve never paid a monthly fee for a checking account in my entire life. It just goes against the very core of my being. But alas, it’s no secret what’s going on here, and I can’t blame Chase. I’m sure I was an unpro

Financial institutions were supposed to be stopped from indulging in their tricks once the Credit Card Act was signed upon last year. However, stay at home moms might have been restricted due to these laws according to many retailers. A lot of companies including Citigroup Inc. are requesting a drop in the proposed rule from Federal Reserve where credit card issuers have to only look at the independent income of the borrower rather than the income of the household overall. This new rule which might come into force for the latest credit card accounts could actually restrict the chances for stay at home moms when it comes to getting credit easily.

This proposed rule is unfair according to some experts of the industry as it would affect the ability of many customers especially the womenfolk staying at home to get credit cards.

There are many that offer a variety of options and knowing which one will work the best for your use will end up saving you money in the long run.

First look at the APR (Annual Percentage Rate). This is the amount you will pay on the balance that is on your card or the amount you transfer from another card. Choosing one with the lowest APR allows you to save money especially if you pay the balance off every month.

What is the credit limit on the card you are considering? This is based on several things such as your credit history, the credit rating you have and your income. If your credit history is not good, the best credit card deals for you may be a secured card until you build your credit back to acceptable levels.

The annual fees charged by the credit car company that you choose can vary.
